Former New York Mets mascot AJ Mass has a new book called Yes, It’s Hot in Here: Adventures in the Weird, Woolly World of Sports Mascots about his time as Mr. Met back in the 90’s.
Mascots are kind of scary as it is and it seems the US government agrees. Mass relates a story in the book about how the Secret Service threatened to kill him if he got too close to President Clinton.
The Prez was at Shea Stadium for a Jackie Robinson tribute and Mr. Met was warned not to get too cozy with the former first Bubba. According to Mr. Met, the Secret Service told him:
“Now listen to me very carefully. … We have snipers all around the stadium, just in case something were to happen. Like I said, do whatever it is you normally do. Nobody will bother you. But approach the president, and we go for the kill shot. ARE–WE–CLEAR?”
Note to self: Write screenplay called Assassination Mets. Get Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Sandra Bullock to star in it. Make millions. Win Oscar.
