The St. Louis Rams selected Missouri defensive end Michael Sam with the 249th pick in the NFL Draft, making him the first openly gay player in the NFL.
It was an emotional and powerful moment that – to their credit – ESPN did not shy away from.
That’s when the twitstorm started.
I’m just as happy for Sam as every other player drafted. Sorry though folks, where you put your dick doesn’t make you Jackie Robinson.

How do the folks who can’t explain Michael Sam to their kids explain Ray Lewis, Jameis Winston, Richie Incognito & Ben Roethlisberger?

Freedom’s best friend is more freedom. Those of us who have had their freedom infringed must support Michael Sam/LGBT community. #greatday

I don’t have a problem with Sam being gay. Be gay. I have a problem with ESPN showing Sam kissing his bf 5,492 times. — Christopher Nicolai (@Nicolai60) May 10, 2014
My boyfriend made me watch the NFL draft and I’m crying. Congratulations @MikeSamFootball. Thank you for making it easier for everyone else

I still maintain that at heart Michael Sam is a Bear.

Just filed an FCC complaint online bc I didn’t want to see Michael Sam kiss his twink boyfriend over and over on NFL TV. You are welcome. — 12yrs a dedspin trol (@AbleArcher86) May 10, 2014
REMINDER: Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend on national TV is not him “flaunting his sexuality,” it’s basic human expression.
